‘Twas The Night Before First Grade

It feels like the last few weeks of summer I’ve been counting down the days until school started back up. Well, here we are. Summer is over, school starts tomorrow. And damn it, I’m sad! Even though I’m at my wits end with trying to think of fun things to do or places to go every day. Even though I’m beyond over listening to my two girls argue back and forth all day. And even though I’m sick of picking up after them 25 times a day…I’m sad! In between the chaos, I loved having them home all summer (this was our first real summer vacation).

As I’m sitting here typing this, I’m home all by myself for the next 2 hours. My oldest is at cheer practice and my youngest went grocery shopping with her dad. It’s just me & the dog…and Blake Shelton (“Every time I hear that song” just came on). Normally I would be bathing myself in this rare opportunity of being home alone, but no. Instead I’m bumming out about sending Sophia off to first grade tomorrow (how the hell did that even happen?). (P.S. My youngest still has another week). I’m stressing over what to make her for lunch…do I make her a cute little sandwich in the shape of a heart or what about a dinosaur? What kind of cookies should I make her for when she gets home? Or should I do cupcakes? Now that I think about it, it was actually easier having her home everyday. We rolled out of bed whenever. Ate whatever. Froyo for dinner? Sure, why not! It’s summer. ::sigh::

She’s super excited to be going back. She loves school. And I love that she loves school. And that she’s so independent. She isn’t the type to cry when I drop her off…that’ll be me. I’ll be the one sitting in my car long after she’s gone in sobbing like I just finished watching My Girl.

I cried like a baby sending her off to Kindergarten last year because that was MY BABY going off to school for the first time. But this year it’s different. She’s older, wiser. She knows what she’s doing. She doesn’t need me to help her find her way through the school to her classroom. She doesn’t need me to even walk her to the door. She’s getting older. And from here she’ll only keep getting older. And that is hard for a mom. I need my kids. Somehow their bickering, nagging and never ending messes keep me sane (strange). I don’t even remember what I did with myself before them.

So I’m fessing up. To all of you that heard me cracking jokes about wanting to send them off to boarding school all summer long…I was wrong. The truth is, I’m going to miss them like hell. Somehow sending her off to first grade feels a little harder than Kindergarten. But it’s cool, I’m sure after a week of fighting over what outfits they will wear, reminding them to do homework and deciding on lunches to pack, I’ll be glad their back in school.

Life is a crazy journey, I guess.

This popped up in my memories today on Facebook from 5 years ago…And tomorrow she’s off to first grade.

Glitter Slim Recipe

Glitter Slime was ALL the rage this summer. Everyone I knew was posting pictures of their kids making it. There were commercials on TV for it. My kids were obsessed with watching YouTube videos of it. Madness I tell ya! Buuut I caved and of course we made our own. It was actually super quick and easy and the best part…it really doesn’t make much of a mess. Check it out!

What you’ll need:

Mixing bowl

Spoon

6 fl. oz. of Elmer’s glitter glue

1/2 tbsp. of baking soda

1 1/2 tbsp. of contact lens solution

Directions:

  1. Pour out the entire bottle of the glitter glue into bowl
  2. Add 1/2 tbsp. of baking soda and mix
  3. Add 1 tbsp. of contact solution
  4. Mix together until the slime begins to form and harden up
  5. Once all ingredients are mixed in use hands to knead and stretch the slime
  6. If needed, add more contact solution (about 1/4 tbsp) to make the slim less sticky
  7. Enjoy!

Summa Summa Summa Time

Well it wasn’t my intention to not blog the ENTIRE summer but it happened. Our schedules have been jam packed. School starts next week so I’m making a promise to myself to get back to blogging on the regular. Ha, who am I kidding?! My kids schedule is even crazier in the fall, but I’m reeeeeally gonna try! I’ll be back soon!

Kisses!

Mommy Confessions Monday

Mommy Confessions Monday

A few nights ago I told my kids it was time for bed an hour (maybe even a little over an hour) early so that I could finish watching 13 Reasons Why. When they asked why it was still so light out I lied about it being some kind of rare occurrence when the sun decides to stay out longer than usual. They bought it. I was able to finish the series…which was brutal.

Hey. Some times we just have to get shit done.

Kids, This Is Why Mom’s Gone Bananas

So there’s this thing, it happens every so often (about 3 or 4 times a year), lasts a few weeks & wreaks absolute havoc on some. It’s called Mercury Retrograde & before y’all call me nuts, hear me out. In short, it’s when Mercury appears to move in a backwards or opposite direction of earth. It’s not actually going backwards, but it’s moving slower than earth causing the illusion that it’s moving backwards. Make sense? Yea, I don’t really get it either. HOWEVER, I do know that whatever the hell it is, it eats me alive every time. I didn’t know anything about this until about a year ago when I was complaining to a friend that I felt like I had a black cloud following me around lately & she casually replied with “oh, it’s just the retrograde, don’t worry.” The what? Huh? After she explained it & after googling it for awhile I am a total believer.

They say that the alignment of the planets, sun, moon, tides, whatever, can all have an impact on us. How? I don’t really know. It’s all science mumbo jumbo that I don’t understand. I need layman’s terms, people! Anyway, when Mercury is in retrograde it’s said to have a negative impact on all things;people, relationships, technology. You name it. It is said to cause major anxiety in some people, sleeplessness, memory loss, break ups, contracts gone wrong, deals falling through, etc. People who tend to suffer from depression might notice a bit more of feeling blue. It’s like Friday the 13th every day for 3 weeks.

I always know when it’s happening because I’ll have tons of anxiety & be an overtired, over emotional, hot mess. I become even more clumsy, foggy brained, even tongue tied. And let me tell you, trying to argue with a 6 year old when you can’t form a sentence does not work in your favor. Just a total hot mess. I’ve heard of doctors not scheduling surgeries during a retrograde & lawyers not signing contracts. We’re all just a little more superstitious. Or crazy. Maybe both.

April’s retrograde started April 10th & for the last week & half I’ve been bat shit crazy. I’m not sleeping well, my dreams are like an LSD trip, I spent 5 minutes looking for my sunglasses only to realize they were on my head & I put my car keys in the pantry. Why? Because of this stupid retrograde. Or I’ve just lost my marbles. Even my laptop completely went haywire & I had to buy a new one. Oh, I also ordered something online TWICE because I had completely forgotten I had already ordered it THE DAY BEFORE!! And one of my girlfriends told me she started thinking about an ex recently…yea, we are TOTALLY blaming that one on the retrograde.

The other day my husband asked what was up with me because I’ve been “different” the last few days. I should just wear a sign. Better yet dude, you should just take over for the next 3 weeks. A quick internet search will point out all the things you shouldn’t do during Mercury’s retrograde while at the same time telling you it’s also a good time to “reflect on” & “reorganize” things in your life. Really? I found my keys in my PANTRY…with my kids fruit snacks & Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies, the only reflecting I’m doing on my life is whether it’s actually time to commit myself or not. And that I need to reorganize the pantry.

Supposedly the people who aren’t bothered by a Mercury retrograde are the ones that were born during a Mercury retrograde. Eff those people. Or maybe you just aren’t in tune with your body. Whatever it is, I bet if you read about this retrograde & pay attention to yourself during one, you’ll find some wonky things going on too. Then you can be part of my Madres Locas club.

It all ends May 2nd, so to all of you feeling it’s effects just hang in there. If you can. Drink an extra glass of wine, pop an extra Ativan (just kidding, never take more than the prescribed amount), take an extra nap. And remember, when you start to feel yourself going crazy, it’s not you. It’s not your kids (it probably is a little), it’s not your husband (it most definitely is a little). You didn’t just come down with instant Alzheimer’s. It’s the bitch of all planets, the evil revolving planet…The Mercury Retrograde & all of it’s messy glory.

(I just want you all to know that while I was typing this I was also making my kids dinner to which I ended up dropping all over my damn oven. So yea, there’s that.)

April’s FabFitFun Box!

April’s FabFitFun box has arrived in time for Spring & I LOVE IT!

Here’s a breakdown…

  • Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails gummies. I’m not a fan of Biotin supplements so this is the only thing in the box I won’t use. Biotin can be used to help grow & strengthen your hair & nails & make your skin look smoother. Thankfully my hair & nails grow crazy fast & I use a different product for my skin that I SWEAR by (I’ll be posting about it soon!). Studies show that Biotin used in supplement form can actually CAUSE acne…that’s exactly what happened to me before, so just an FYI. (Retails for $12)
  • Milly “Slay All Day” zip pouch. A super cute water-resistant bag that can be used as a make up bag, toiletry bag when traveling or even a quick & easy clutch to carry around. (Retails for $45)
  • Gypsy Roundie 05. I love this one! You can use it as a blanket, towel, decor.
  • Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator. I love trying new skin care products so I was excited to try this one. It scrubs away dead, dry skin cells & leaves you with bright, smooth skin. I’ve used it twice & it really does make your skin look & feel awesome. Also minimizes pores!  (Retails for $79)
  • Karuna Hydrating+ Face Mask. I still haven’t tried this one yet but who doesn’t love a good face mask?! (Retails for $28)
  • Briogeo Rosarco Milk-Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray. This stuff is great! It made my very thick hair feel soft & healthy…like I’m not ridiculously overdue for a haircut. (Retails for $20)
  • Emerald Duv “Joshua Tree” Cage Bracelet. Super cute bangle. Trendy. (Retails for $80)
  • Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish. I received the white & light pink which are both cute…and have both already been stolen by my 6 year old. (Retails for $19)
  • RealHer Lip Kit. I haven’t tried them yet but the packaging & meaning behind the company is super cute. A father started the company with his daughter in mind so each product has words of encouragement on them. (Retails for $48)Sign up here with my link! http://xo.fff.me/fp0-R

It’s Wine Day…It’s Wine Day!!

It’s my favorite day of the month…wine delivery day! Winc is a monthly subscription service that delivers wine RIGHT. TO. YOUR. DOOR! You get 4 bottles from all over the world for only $52 a month! Yes, I realize I can just drive down to the closest liquor store & buy 4 bottles, BUT #1. It’s a lot of fun to try different wines from all over the world, even little hidden islands that you’ve never heard of. And #2, why get in the car & drive to the store when I can order from my computer & have it delivered to my door?!

You get to pick what types you get; white or red, or both. You take a survey so they can get a feel for your taste & they put together the 4 bottles for you OR you can go on & put together your own 4 bottles. I currently have mine set up to 3 bottles of white/rose & 1 bottle of red for the old man (I’m not a red fan).

My Winc box for April has 2 bottles of Rosé, a sauvignon blanc & a red blend from Argentina. We’ve loved almost every wine we’ve tried so far! I highly recommend giving them a shot! Use my link & you’ll get a FREE bottle!! https://hi.winc.com/jdiatalevi

My Favorite Spring/Summer Trend Right Now

I love me some fashion trends, especially Spring & Summer. Cute dresses, fun colors & of course fabulous shoes…unless you’re one of those people who live somewhere where it’s warm all year ’round & you can get away with wearing fabulous peep toes & sandals every day. You don’t get that luxury when you live in Boston. Anyway, with Spring starting & Summer quickly following, all the latest trends are starting to pop up. My favorite trend right now is the Bomber jacket! I love that they’ve brought these back! They’re light & comfy, but also super cute & they’re so versatile. You can wear a bomber jacket casually with some jeans or dress it up over a cute dress. They have so many styles now too from solid colors to pretty embroidery work (which in itself is a huge trend right now), like the JustFab one posted below (I happen to own it & love it!)

I put together some of my favorite ones below. You can find them anywhere, so pick a few up!

More of my favorite 2017 trends coming up…
